Illidan Stormrage
Illidan Stormrage is the final demon boss of Black Temple and self-proclaimed lord of the Outlands. In the Burning Crusade expansion, he is the most powerful boss. After defeating the Illadari Council, go up either of ramps in the council room to Illidan Stormrage’s area. Akama comes to open the door for you.
Abilities
Illidan Stormrage’s hit point have been reported anywhere between 5 to 8 million hit points. Since Illidan Stormrage’s abilities largely have to do with the form he is in during the fight, these abilities shall be listed below in that order excluding those abilities that happen simultaneously while he is flying in the air.
Normal Form
Illidan spends the first phase of this fight in his normal form. He switches between demon and normal forms in the third and fourth phases of the fight.
Agonizing Flames – This buff is usually cast during the third phase of the fight.
Draw Soul – This ability drains the targets in front of him that heals him for 100,000 hit point s while dealing 5,000 shadow damage to his targets.
Flame Crash – __________Blue flame patches that appear underneath Illidan when he lands from a jump. The flame patches deal 5,000 fire damage to targets within a 10 yard radius and last for 2 minutes.
Melee Strike – Melee attacks that hit from 6,000 to 8,000 damage on plate armor.
Parasitic Shadowfiend – Illidan randomly targets raid members and cast a parasite debuff on the player. The debuff lasts for 10 seconds and does 3,000 shadow damage every 2 seconds. Two parasite shadowfiend mobs spawn on the player and will melee the highest global threat target. If they are able to melee the player, that player also receives the debuff and will eventually spawn two parasite shadowfiend mobs.
Shear – An attack with a 1.5 second cast time that reduces the health of the main aggro target by 60 percent. The main tank must be ready to Shield Block to mitigate the attack.
Demon Form
Illidan switches between demon and normal forms in the third and fourth phases of the fight.
Aura of Dread – This aura affects all within a 15 yard radius around Illidan by dealing 1,000 shadow damage to players every second they remain in this area. It also stacks and increases shadow damage taken by 30 percent.
Flame Burst – A resistible spell that throws fire bolts at the entire raid, which do 3,500 fire damage to each member and also does additional splash damage to any player within 5 yards of an affected target.
Shadow Blast – A resistible spell that targets the highest agro target and does anywhere between 8,000 to 11,000 shadow damage. There is also a splash that will affect anyone within 20 yards of the shadow blasted target.
Shadow Demons – Four demons spawn at Illidan Stormrage that target raid members at random and stun them. They slowly move towards the players and will kill the player if they reach their target and then move onto another player.
Flight and Flame
During the second phase of the fight, Illidan Stormrage flies into the air while two Flames of Azzinoth are on the ground. Illidan Stormrage does the following abilities from the air:
Dark Barrage – Illidan Stormrage casts a dark eye beam on a random player that does 3,000 shadow damage each second for 10 seconds.
Demon Fire – Eye blasts leave blue fire trails on the ground called demon fire. Demon Fire does 2,000 fire damage each second that a player stands in it.
Eye Blast – Illidan’s eyes sweep across the platform every 30 seconds with a blue fire beam that does between 19,000 and 20,000 fire damage and leaves a trail of demon fire.
Fireball – Illidan Stormrage’s casting time for this spell is 2 seconds and it does between 2,500 and 3,500 fire damage to all targets within a 10 yard radius.
Flames of Azzinoth have around 1 million hit points and hit for about 2,000 to 3,000 fire damage on tanks with maximum fire resistance (365). Two spawn in the second phase and both must be tanked.
Blaze – Yellow clouds left by the Flames that deal 5,000 fire damage every second a player stands in it. The debuff stacks.
Flame Blast – A fire AoE that does between 7,000 to 9,000 damage in a frontal cone for 15 yards.
The Pull and Position
The initial pull is very easy. To start the event, a player speaks to Akama. The main tank should stand near Illidan Stormrage. Akama and Illidan Stormrage speak for a few moments and Illidan becomes active. Give the main tank enough time to grab aggro or use a hunter misdirect to guarantee initial aggro since healers will be placing HoTs on the tank. The raid should be near the center of the room.
Battle
Phase One
Phase One is about positioning. The tank must keep moving Illidan Stormrage to avoid the Flame Crash patches. While moving Illidan, the tank must watch out for Shear casts and be ready to Shield Block while moving to avoid having this debuff. The raid needs to stay behind Illidan to avoid possible Draw Souls.
To handle the parasitic shadowfiends effectively, designate one spot for the mages to stand. Direct the players with the debuff to this area so the mages can burning the shadowfiends down after using Frost Nova on them. Remind players with the debuff to move once the shadowfiends spawn. Most of the healers will be on the tank during this phase but one or two healers need to watch these players.
Phase Two
Illidan Stormrage enters the air when his health reaches 65 percent health. At this time, the raid moves to the metal grate circle in the middle of the room while the two tanks move to the left and right outer edges of the circle. Spread the raid around the middle of the circle possibly by pairing people to avoid many taking AoE damage.
The flame tanks move in an intricate dance while tanking the mobs. They move opposite from each other while avoiding Eye Beams and Flame Blasts. If one tank is moving clockwise, the other one mirrors the first tank’s movement in a counterclockwise fashion. If one of the tanks goes too far from another, one of the flames will charge the raid. Neither tank can move beyond the northern or southern point of the circle. The Flames also charge if resurrection spells or totems are used in this phase.
The raid takes a great deal of damage during this phase. Illidan Stormrage casts fireballs at the raid and dark barrages at individual raid members. It is good to have at least three healers focusing on the raid while the other ones focus on the two tanks. Phase Two ends once the flames are dead so focus fire each one.
Phase Three: Normal Form
Phase Three begins in the middle of the metal grate where Illidan Stormrage lands. The tank needs to drag Illidan from the grate to the entrance of the balcony (or room). Illidan is in his normal form as he is being dragged. All of the abilities present in Phase One are present while Illidan is in his normal form with the addition of Agonizing Flames.
Illidan Stormrage casts Agonizing Flames on a single player but it will affect all players within 5 yards of the affected target. The raid needs to spread out to avoid this while staying in range to damage Illidan or heal the tank.
Phase Three: Demon Within
Illidan Stormrage turns into a large black demon that must be tanked by a warlock tank. Illidan does not move during this phase but opts to use his ranged abilities to damage the warlock and tank. To avoid Shadow Demons killing players, use the length of the balcony.
Spread the raid around the room and maximize the distance between Illidan and the raid. Position the warlock at maximum distance and healers behind him, preferably near one of the side of the balcony with his healers behind him (at least 2). The warlock should have Soul Link for this fight. Have two healers dedicated to his pet in case one is stunned by the Shadow Demon debuff.
Melee players and hunters damage each of the Shadow Demons until they are dead and need to be healed by healers in range since they often run the span of the room to burn down the demons. Other healers can be assigned to heal their groups or groups near them. Illidan Stormrage remains in demon form for 30 seconds before returning to his normal form. He will switch forms repeatedly until his health reaches 30 percent so the raid needs to be prepared to switch positions quickly.
Phase Four
Once Illidan Stormrage’s health reaches 30 percent, he casts a Shadow Prison on each raid member, which lasts for 30 seconds. The prison grants damage immunity but also prevents movement or ability use. The NPC Maiev Shadowsong appears and joins the fight at this point.
Maev Shadowsong assists the raid by placing traps around the balcony. Illidan Stormrage enrages during this fight and can be trapped to stop him from doing damage while he is enraged. Illidan also takes extra damage while in a trap. It is possible to keep a tank alive while Illidan is enraged but the traps offer the benefit of extra damage so it is best to try to trap him as much as possible.
All of the abilities that Illidan Stormrage uses in his Phase Three Normal Form apply in this phase. Even though this is the home stretch of the fight, the raid needs to be focused and aware of parasites, Agonizing Flames, Flame Crash, and the possibilities of draw soul. The main tank needs to pay special attention to shear casts,
The Illidan Stormrage fight is worthy of an end boss. It requires focus and takes time to learn. You learn one phase to learn the next phase until you reach the end of fight. Do not
get frustrated while learning. One tip is that raids normally take about 8 healers. Another is to use resurrection spells after Phase Two ends. Keep working at this fight until you master it. Once you do, you’ll have mastered the Burning Crusade Expansion.
