2.ATTUNEMENT

Introduction
The Burning Crusade brought many instance attunement requirements to World of Warcraft players. Many of the raiding instance requirements were then removed by Blizzard since they were preventing guild progression. At this time, only three raiding instances have requirements to enter the instance. The two end-game instances, Black Temple and Battle for Mount Hyjal, have requirements but Karazhan also has a requirement. Blizzard starts out the Outland raiding experience with attunement requirements and finishes the raiding
Attunement for instances usually involve large quest chains that begin outside instances and may have sections that need completion in other instances. The completion of the quest may either provide players with an item to give them access to the instance or just allow them into the instance. This section provides players with an overview of the quest chain for the three raiding instances that have attunement requirements.
Karazhan Attunement
Karazhan is a 10 player raiding zone. Many guilds create multiple raiding groups to weekly run through Karazhan until all players have whatever Tier Four gear or equivalent loot they need from the instance. When one becomes 70, you would think a player could just stroll right into the instance but not so fast. Entrance to Karazhan requires the completion of a quest chain. Below is an overview of the quest chain.
Arcane Disturbances
Archmage Alturus in Deadwind Pass assigns this quest to players. To complete this quest, use the Violet Scrying Crystal that he provides to survey the sources of water in the Master’s Cellar in the undead town. Make sure to survey both the well and pond in the underground cellars. There are two entrances and players must use both of them. Do not race down there quite yet!

Restless Activity
Archmage Alturus also has another quest that takes place in the undead town and cellars. He assigns players the task of killing the undead until they have 10 Ghostly Essences. Do this simultaneously while completing the Arcane Disturbances quest.
Contact from Dalaran
Archmage Alturus has trouble walking so he sends players to Dalaran to give his report to Archmage Cedric his report. Dalaran is the large dome and town that is listed as being in Alterac Mountains, Silverpine Forest, and Hillsbrad Foothills. Any player that has been in these zones has explored the shiny purple dome at least once.
Khadgar
Archmage Cedric has the same walking issues that Alturus has and sends players off to share Alturus’ Report to Khadgar in Shattrath City. Khadgar is in the center of the Terrace of Light. He seems to have progressed a great deal from being Medivh’s assistant.
Entry into Karazhan
Silly assistant tells players that he split the key into pieces. The First Key Fragment is in an arcane container hidden in Auchindoun’s Shadow Labyrinth instance. The container is in Murmur’s room so either fight or sneak by Murmur to get the key. A mob will spawn from the arcane container. This mob actually has key on him so he must be killed and looted. Shadow Labyrinth is a locked instance. Players must complete and defeat the last boss from Sethekk Halls to get the key fragment. Return to Khadgar with the fragment.
The Second and Third Fragments
Khadgar couldn’t just hide the keys under his bed. He had to hide the Second Key Fragment in Coilfang Reservoir’s Steamvault instance and the Third Key Fragment in Tempest Keep’s The Arcatraz. Bring the keys fragments back to Khadgar to continue the quest line.

The Master’s Touch
Now you have to get Medivh’s consent to use the key. One slightly problem: Medivh is dead. Travel back in time to get Medivh’s consent. The only place to do this is in the Caverns of Time. Medivh is in Black Morass. Complete Black Morass and a grateful Medivh will gladly give consent. Return to Khadgar with the restored key.
Return to Khadgar
Players should go back to Khadgar and rub it into his face that Medivh has given them his own key.
The Violet Eye
Khadgar sends players back to Archmage Alturus to begin the multiple quests that he has to offer. At this point, players can enter Karazhan. Congratulations!
The Karazhan quest line is involved and has quite a few quests that require groups to complete or some creative stealth abilities. Players still run the instances needed for these quests so there should not be any problems progressing through this quest line.
Battle For Mount Hyjal Attunement
The Battle for Mount Hyjal attunement process consists of one quest but this quest requires players to kill the final bosses in both The Eye and Serpentshrine Cavern. The Battle for Mount Hyjal zone is required to complete Black Temple attunement.
Vials of Eternity
Soridormi in the Caverns of Time gives players the Battle of Mount of Hyjal attunement quest. Make sure to have at least a friendly reputation with The Scale of Sands. To gain entrance to this zone, this quest requires that both Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern and Kael’thas in The Eye must be defeated. Loot the vial remnants from both bosses and return to Soridormi with them. She will then give players access to open the Battle for Mount Hyjal for players.
Successfully complete Durnholde and Black Morass instances to increase reputation with The Scales of Sands.

Black Temple Attunement
Black Temple has one of the longest attunement quest lines in World of Warcraft at present. The quest line is available to those that have chosen an Aldor or Scryer faction. Go to the appropriate faction city in Shadowmoon Valley to start the quest line for Black Temple.
Tablets of Baa’ri
Anchorite Ceyla at the Altar of Sha’tar and Arcanist Thelis at the Sanctum of the Stars in Shadowmoon Valley give this quest to players of their faction. Players must collect 12 Baa’ri Tablets from the Ruins of Baa’ri area in Shadowmoon Valley. Players can collect the tablets from ground spawns and from the corpses of the Ashtongue in the area.
Oronu the Elder
Depending on the player faction, either Anchorite Ceyla or Arcanist Thelis gives this quest once the Tablets of Baa’ri is completed. Kill Oronu the Elder and loot the Orders from Akama. The player should return the orders to the NPC that give him/her the quest. Oronu the Elder is located in the Ruins of Baa’ri in Shadowmoon Valley.
The Ashtongue Corruptors
Time to slaughter more Ashtongue! The Ashtongue Corruptors are actually four shaman that are located in different areas of Shadowmoon Valley. Each shaman drops a medallion fragment when killed. Kill the shaman’s totems before engaging the shaman. Each totem will spawn elementals that need to be killed. This quest can be done solo with eases. Eykenen is the Corruptor of Earth and resides in the Fel Pits near the Hand of Gul’dan but closer to The Warden’s Cage area. Haalum is the Corruptor of Air and resides in Netherwing Pass, close the altar that shadow weave tailors use to make their shadow cloth. Lakaan is the Corruptor of Water and is residing in a pool of water just north of Coilskar Point. Uylaru is the Corruptor of Fire and is residing in the Fel Pits near the Hand of Gul’dan. Put the medallion together and return to the NPC that started the quest.

The Warden’s Cage
The Warden’s Cage is relatively close to where Eykenen stands, waiting slaughter. It is roughly south of the Ruins of Baa’ri on a mountain top. Fly above the area and scout it out first. There is a square opening in the center of the fortress that players can fly into without engaging the mobs if they time it just right. Fly inside and follow the underground tunnel until Sanoru is visible.
Proof of Allegiance
Sanoru wants players to prove themselves worthy of meeting Akama by doing a little contract-killing: our next hit is Zandras. The demon is actually patrolling the top areas of the fortress with a few imp buddies. Nothing like a walk with a few imp friends if you are a demon I suppose. Take at least one other player if possible since the imps can be annoying and the fight can quickly get out of control. Once he is dead, back to Sanoru the players should go.
Akama
Sanoru states that Akama is in an underground passage in the Warden’s Cage, which is hidden by that gunk-infested water on the right. It is time to put on the hazmat suit and go for a little swim and pray that Area 52 erases this sludge swim memory. Complete the quest by speaking with Akama. Players should not fear if Akama is forced to kill them if a demon happens to wander in on the meeting. Akama, being a loyal friend, will resurrect them after going through their pockets, looking for munchies from Shattrath. Akama sends players on the next part of the quest after resurrecting them.
Seer Udalo
Akama tells players that Seer Udalo has the final piece of the real Medallion of Karabor, which is what is needed to gain access into the Black Temple. Seer Udalo is trapped in Tempest Keep’s Arcatraz. This can be done in a non-heroic instance. He is located in the room with etherals, unfortunately he is dead and lying on the floor.

A Mysterious Portent
Before leaving the area, players notice that Udalo wrote Atam’al on the floor. Return to Akama with this information.
The Ata’mal Terrace
Akama directs players to Atam’al Terrace in Shadowmoon Valley. The object is to get the Heart of Fury that is on the terrace. The warlocks and Shadowlord Deathwail must be killed to get the Heart of Fury item. Groups should kill the summoners before killing Shadowlord Deathwail, who is flying above the area. It is possible to solo or duo the quest by using line of sight techniques making use of the building’s roof. Once the Heart of Fury item is obtained, back to Akama players go.
Akama’s Promise
Akama gives you a Medallion of Karabor to take to A’dal in Shattrath. A’dal inserts the Heart of Fury into the medallion, shows the players visions, and quite a bit. One would think that they are done here but they are not. Akama also promises to assist the player when the final battle with Illidan is about to occur. The quest line continues in Serpentshrine Cavern.
The Secret Compromised
Seer Olum is in Fathom-Lord Karathress and spawns after Fathom-Lord Karathress dies. Seer Olum gives players a message to deliver to Akama.
Ruse of the Ashtongue
It seems that Illidan is become suspicious. That pesky demon is creating more work for players. To prove Akama’s loyalty, Illidan demands that Al’ar, Kael’thas’ pet, be killed. Al’ar is in Tempest Keep”s The Eye. Akama gives players an Ashtongue Cowl to wear while killing Al’ar. These cowls change player’s appearance into Ashtongues and must be activated before Al’ar is engaged. Once the poor phoenix is killed, head back to Akama.
An Artifact from the Past
Illidan is now focused on Kael’thas so Akama and players now can complete their secret schemes in peace. What Akama requests now is a Time-Phased Phylactery from the first boss in the Battle for Mount Hyjal, Rage Winterchill. Do the attunement for this zone and go in there and get the item and bring it back to Akama.

The Hostage Soul
After delivering Akama’s mojo in a bottle to him, he tells players that the item shall help him regain his soul that is trapped in The Black Temple. Players should go to A’dal in Shattrath and tell him of what has passed.
Entry into The Black Temple
A’dal is a wise floating puff cloud in the sky and knows that Akama needs a distraction to get into The Black Temple to free his soul. A’dal mentally introduces players to another puff cloud that is near the entrance of The Black Temple: Xi’ri. This means it is time to go to The Black Temple.
A Distraction for Akama
Speak to Xi’ri to create a distraction so that Akama can sneak into The Black Temple with Maiev. Feel free to watch the battle as it goes on and follow the NPCs to the zone entrance for The Black Temple. Congratulations! You are now able to enter The Black Temple.
Completing these quests give players the Medallion of Karabor, which grants players the ability to enter the Black Temple. It also provides a large portion of shadow resistance statistics, which will be useful in both the Black Temple and Battle for Mount Hyjal.
The following quests complete the chain once Illidan is defeated: Seek Out the Ashtongue, Redemption of the Ashtongue, and The Fall of the Betrayer.
