What are random events? They are random occurrences that can happen to any
player anytime. Some of them will put the targeted player to a halt on what they are doing.
Others will force the player to spring into action or otherwise get killed.
Ever wonder why random events happen when they do? Well, it's because the
staff members of Runescape happens to want you to be paying attention to the game.
They don't want you to just click on a fishing spot and leave the screen alone. That's why
some random events will activate on you while fishing, training, or not doing anything at
all.
Some random events are treated with ignorance (like the Drunken Dwarf). When
they are, the npc that appeared will attack you after an amount of time has passed. The
level of the random events varies depending on the level of your character.
Note that there are two kinds of random events: general events that can activate
on you anytime, whether you are walking or standing still, and specific events, which will
only activate when you are specifically working on something.
Events
Event: A mysterious old man appearing before you (general).
Npc: Mysterious Old Man
Respond with: Talk to him.
Effect if responded: He'll give you a gift. This includes many of the items in RS.
Effect if left ignored: He'll teleport to a different location within a time limit.
Event: A mysterious black shaded man appears before you (general).
Npc: Mysterious Man
Respond with: Nothing you can do. He’ll simply teleport you to a maze, or another game
activity. If he teleports you to the maze then the object of the game is to find your way
towards the center of the maze. In the center is a treasure chest. But while spending your
time walking around the maze and finding the doors, the percent score will gradually drop.
The percent indicates the amount(s) of the original item(s) you’ll get if you beat the maze
in that percentage. For example, say you completed the maze with %100 (which is
impossible to do), and you got 1000 chaos runes because of it. Now, if you had completed
that maze with 50% left with the same prize in the chest, you’d get 500 chaos runes
instead of the original 1000. The chest contains many decent and sometimes valuable
prizes. If you can’t complete the task with more than 1% left then you’ll be teleported back
to where you were originally at.
Another one of the activity that the mysterious man might send you to is the Mime
room. This room is like a theater. There’ll be an audience sitting at the seat to watch the
show. Your objective for this game is to imitate the Mime next to you. He’ll gesture an
emote, and then you’ll have to copy it. Pick the same emote that the Mime did from an
option list. The prize for this activity can result in a new emote that you can use that you
can’t previously use before (i.e. glass wall, glass box, climb rope, etc.)
Effect if responded: You’ll earn yourself a reward. Prizes may include gems, money,
mime suits (non-tradable), or the ability to use one of the four miming emotes (glass wall,
glass box, climb rope, or lean).
Effect if left ignored: Nothing will happen. There is no downside in this except the regret
that you could’ve earned yourself a good prize.
Event: A drunken dwarf greets you (general).
Npc: Drunken Dwarf
Respond with: Reply back.
Effect if responded: He'll give you a beer and kebab.
Effect if left ignored: You get attacked by him. The bad thing: you can't retaliate.
Event: A magic genie greets you (general).
Npc: Genie
Respond with: Talk back to him immediately. He'll give you a well worth prize.
Effect if responded: A magic lamp will be given to you. If rubbed, you can choose a
certain skill to gain exp. The exp you receive depends on the level of that skill. You earn
10 exp for each level. For example, you choose to advance in hit points (which most
players will pick) and your hit point level is 50. This means that you'll advance in 500 hit
point exp.
Effect if left ignored: He'll either teleport you to another location or snatches some items
from your inventory and drops them on the ground.
Event: A Swarm attacks you (general).
Npc: Swarm

Effect if responded: It will disappear and you'll get a strange fruit. Eat, and it will heal
some of your health.
Effect if left ignored: The plant will attack you. There is a good chance of getting
poisoned. If you do get poisoned you can cure yourself with an Anti-Poison Potion or
Super Anti-Poison Potion.
Event: Vines start to spread out around you (general).

get you attacked.

Npc: Rock Golem (its level varies depending on yours)
Respond with: Either run away or try to kill it.
Effect if responded: If you run away from it, it will vanish after a time limit.

automatically retaliate if you set the option "Auto-retaliate" on.
Event: The rock you are mining has smokes coming out of it (specific).
Activation: If you or another player mines a rock.
Npc: None
Respond with: Don't continue mining the ore out of it.

and you can mine it again.
Effect if left ignored: If it explodes while you are still mining it, then you'll receive a nice
reward of getting hit severely and breaking your pickaxe. Pickaxe can be repaired by
Nurof at the pickaxe shop in the Dwarven Mine. Not very costly to repair when compared
to buying a new one.
Event: Your pickaxe head flies off the handle and lands a few steps away (specific).

and keep it.

Activation: Appears when you are fishing.
Npc: River Troll (its level varies depending on yours)
Respond with: Run or fight.
Effect if responded: If ran from, the troll will disappear.
Effect if left ignored: If you attack, the fighting style is the same as fighting any other
monster.
Event: A fish jumps from the water and scatters your fishing equipment (specific).
Npc: Black big fish
Respond with: Nothing you can do.
Effect if responded: Just pick up the equipment that the fish scattered.
Effect if left ignored: Other player might pick up your equipment after an amount of time. If
they don't, your equipment will disappear anyways after a time limit.
Event: A whirlpool appears in your fishing spot (specific).
Activation: Appears while fishing.
Npc: None
Respond with: Stop fishing at that location.
Effect if responded: The whirlpool will disappear after awhile.
Effect if left ignored: If you fish in the whirlpool for too long then your fishing equipments
will be lost. This effect won’t work on level76 and higher fishers.
Event: The fishing spot that you are fishing at moves to another location.
Activation: This will many times happen while you are fishing.
Npc: None
Respond with: Move to another location.
Effect if responded: You’ll be able to fish.

Respond with: Cut other trees.

be fixed at Bob’s Axe Shop in Lumbridge. Fixing your hatchet will require a little money.
