2.1. Newcomers
(If the game takes too long to load, just be patient, it will finish up soon.)
Welcome to the exciting and thrilling world of Runescape. First, like all other
mmorpg’s, you will have to create your character's appearance. Don’t worry too much
about how your character look like, you can later on in the game if you wish go to the
Makeover Mage’s house to change your character’s appearance for a fee of 5,000gps.
Anyways, after finishing up with your character’s appearance you will begin on the Tutorial
Island. This is where every newcomers begin their Runescape life. You will have to speak
to each one of the guides before you can start doing anything freely. As for the mouse,
when first starting the game your control option will be set on a two-button mouse game.
This means that you have to use both mouse clicks to get the full control of the game. To
talk to the guides, all you have to do is either right-click on them and then choose the
option “Talk to whomever”, or you can just simply left click on them. They will explain the
basics and controls of the game to you. Just follow their direction and do what they say.
Pretty soon you'll be free at will. At the end of the tutorial you will be transported on a boat
to the world where your adventure will begin.
As the boat sails on, you'll arrive at Lumbridge, a small town and centre to every
newcomers. Within this town are scattered many beggars and scammers. But a lot of
people here are new to the game. Try to make some friends. They will be able to answer
any questions you have or help you throughout areas of the game. Now that you're free to
do anything, I suggest you either go train or learn the skills and essentials of the game.
Maybe you will even be one of the top players! So read on and I'll tell you more.
2.2. Getting Started
The reason that I suggested you train first is because practically most people call
combat level 3-10 players a "newb".
Note that noob and newb have two completely different meanings. Noob is what
they call a scammer or someone who did something "messed up". Newb is what they call
a newcomer. Usually level 3-10 are newbs, not noobs, or at least, not yet.
The best place to train at first to raise your combat level is at the cow pen
northeast of where you started. To attack the cows is the same way as to speak to the
guides. Be sure to attack the cows wisely though. They are pretty strong to a meekly
fighter, but as you gain more exp you'll become much stronger. Click on the “Attack Cows”
option to attack them. If your hit point (hp) reaches 0 you will die and be teleported back to
Lumbridge at the spot where you first set foot upon, not to mention that you will also lose
all but three of your most valuable items. If your hp is too low, waiting for a certain amount
of time will rejuvenate back your health.
Don't worry if you are nearly dead. The cows drop meat, which you can cook and
eat. To cook the meat you need some logs and a tinderbox. Be sure that you have kept
the hatchet and tinderbox provided for you at the beginning of the game. Go ahead and
chop down a tree with the hatchet. You might slip and fail to hit the tree on the first try but
try again and pretty soon you'll succeed. Once you have some logs, drop them on the
ground. Then use a tinderbox on it until you’ve successfully lighted a fire. Once you have
a fire going, snatch some cow meat and cook it over the fire. When you have a
successfully cooked meat, eat it and it will heal 3 hp. It is as simple as that.
I suggest you train here until your attack, strength, and defense are lvl-15 or at
least your combat level is 15. Then it is time that you should begin making some money.
The most effective way for making money for non-members is mining. Grab that pickaxe
that you were given in the beginning of the game and get mining. Go to the mining place
southwest of Falador and mine copper until level 15 (if you don’t know where the mining
area is, click on the “World Map” link on the top of the game-screen to see a full text map
of the RS world). Then mine iron until lvl-30. Now you can go and mine coal, the most
prize procession to mining. This is what most miners/smithers purchase. There are many
good locations to mine coals at, but the best place for now in f2p servers is either in
Barbarian Village or underground in the Dwarven Mine. There are several strong
scorpions and King Scorpions in the Dwarven Mine so take precautions if intending to
mine here. The price range for coal is around 100-200gps each.. From here on, your
character should be set and you can choose to do anything you want.
