A good idea is to wield a poisonous dragon dagger if you are able to and to use the dagger to poison your opponent. You can even try to trick your challengers by wearing lower quality gears before the fight and then switching to your most decent equipments when the fight begins by keeping it in your inventory (no, you will not drop or lose your items if you die, only what you wagered).
